Continue your journey and suddenly, right in front of you...... hundreds of screaming, sobbing, hysterical fans desperate for a glimpse of their favourite Beatle. It's the height of Beatlemania and the pop world has gone crazy over the four lads from Liverpool. Move on and the world becomes more colourful, the music is dreamlike.... it's 1967 and 'flower power' & 'Pepper' has influenced a whole 'new generation'. THE WORLD'S MOST VALUABLE SPECTACLES ARRIVE IN LIVERPOOL
"THROUGH THE LENSES OF LENNON 1970-1973"
A NEW PERMANENT EXHIBIT AT AWARD-WINNING VENUE THE BEATLES STORY at ALBERT DOCK in LIVERPOOL

Media View 6pm-8pm Tuesday 16 July
Photocall 2pm-4pm Tuesday 16 July
Open to the public from 18 July

Enter a dimly lit room - in the centre, suspended magically within glass on a pedestal are the original, legendary, orange-tinted round spectacles that were such a part of the Lennon image from 1970-1973. Today these spectacles are valued at over £1million - making them the most valuable spectacles in the world.

The lights dim further and there, through a giant reproduction of the spectacles, we see images of the major events, images, places and people that most affected and influenced Lennon whilst wearing the orange glasses: the Vietnam War - the Peace Movement - Watergate - New York - simply life "Through the Lenses of Lennon".

The pictures fade and immediately a bank of video screens displays Lennon in his Limo on his last day on this Earth - then darkness - silence - the radio announcement "Lennon has been shot!"

Suddenly on the display Lennon's story rushes past your eyes - in reverse - shocking, overwhelming, poignant.

These same spectacles, that Lennon chose to wear while composing his world-famous album IMAGINE, will now be on permanent display at The Beatles Story. "You can't get much closer to the real John Lennon than seeing life through the very spectacles he wore to create some of his most memorable music" says Mike Byrne, a director of The Beatles Story.

The colour of the John Lennon glasses - in the feng shui discipline - is believed to be the stimulus for inspiration, and Lennon, an early feng shui devotee, chose orange for the tint of his prescription Savile Row glasses for that reason.

Lennon, who famously suffered from severe astigmatism, needed to wear spectacles, and was one of the first among his generation to make a fashion statement with them. Anyone will recognise a drawing of him from just a tuft of hair, the almost round tinted glasses and his distinctive nose!

This pair of spectacles uses an early version of photochromatic glass - a lens which reacts to light - darkening as strong light hits, fading again in the shade. However, after several years the tint becomes fixed as the chemical within the glass loses its effectiveness, so now the shade is set, as you will see in the display.

This awe-inspiring exhibit will be open to the public from 18 July 2002 and will be the new highlight of the award-winning venue.

The Quarrymen and Skiffle - the UK Years

New Exhibition opened 16 May at THE BEATLES STORY, LIVERPOOL

Stop Press: Winner - Visitor Attraction of the Year Mersey Tourism Awards ’01

The Quarrymen and Skiffle - the UK Years, 16 May - 1 November 2002 at The Beatles Story, Liverpool, revealed for the first time the fascinating yet forgotten story of how a new musical craze sweeping across Britain led to one of the biggest stories the music industry has known.

1956. Picture the scene: Quarry Bank High School, Liverpool where the 15 year-old singer/guitarist John Lennon has the idea of forming a skiffle group with three of his mates, on washboard, guitar and tea chest bass. The group becomes known as The Quarrymen and soon begins playing in public - their first gig is probably at St Peter’s Youth Club in Woolton. The following year on Saturday 6 July The Quarrymen play the Garden Fete at St Peter’s Church - notable as being the day that John Lennon first meets Paul McCartney, who subsequently introduces him to George Harrison.

Skiffle, which originated in the Southern States of America via performers such as Huddie Ledbetter (Leadbelly) and Big Bill Broonzy, was all the rage in the UK in the late 50s. Skiffle used conventional instruments as well as the more ‘unusual’ ones such as washboard and tea chest bass - which you could find in most back yards of the time. This music was made famous in the UK by Lonnie Donegan, who was a major influence on John Lennon.

On display at the exhibition will be a number of the original instruments used by the group; a banjo that John Lennon played, Colin Hanton’s first drum kit - still with its sticks and brushes - and a record of Lonnie Donegan’s Rock Island Line, which Lennon sold for 2 shillings and sixpence to Rod Davis. There will also be photographs, (including one of The Quarrymen as they are today!) and other material illustrating, alongside the story of The Quarrymen, the importance of skiffle in the UK - as a catalyst for rock 'n' roll, rhythm and blues and pop - from the very early days to the beginning of The Beatles Story itself.
